OCI renewal comes up in conversation more than almost any other topic we help with, and it’s rarely because the process itself is that complicated — it’s that the guidance is scattered across a few different websites, written in a way that assumes you already know the terminology. When do you actually need to renew?
An OCI card issued against a passport needs to be updated (not always technically a full “renewal”, but treated as one in practice) when you get a new passport after turning 20, and again after turning 50 — those are the two mandatory re-registration points. Outside of those ages, a lost or damaged card is the other common reason people come to us.
The document checklist
- Current OCI card (front and back)
- Current and previous passport (the one the OCI was originally issued against, if different)
- A recent passport-style photo meeting the specification
- Proof of address in the UK
- The completed application form for the relevant category (renewal, re-issue after new passport, or replacement for lost/damaged)
The process, step by step
- Confirm which category applies to you. Renewal after a new passport and replacement for a lost card are different application types with slightly different documents — getting this right first saves a rejected or delayed application later.
- Gather the documents above before starting the online form — trying to do it half-prepared is where most of the frustration comes from.
- Complete the online application through the relevant portal, upload your documents and photo to specification.
- Book and attend your appointment at the visa application centre to submit biometrics and physical documents.
- Track the application using the reference provided — processing times vary, so build in a buffer if you have travel planned.

Where people usually get stuck
Almost always it’s the photo specification (background colour, sizing) or submitting under the wrong application category. Neither is a big problem if caught early, but both cause delays if the application’s already been submitted incorrectly.
