A practical guide to booking assistance for an elderly parent flying to India alone

India Gate, Delhi

This is one of the calls we get most often, usually with a slightly worried tone to it: “my mum/dad wants to fly to India on their own, and I want to make sure it’s actually handled properly.” It’s a completely reasonable thing to want reassurance about, so here’s what we’d actually walk you through.

What assistance is available, and what it covers

Airlines offer special assistance for elderly or less mobile passengers, typically covering: help at check-in, a wheelchair or buggy through the airport if needed, priority boarding, help at security, and — critically for connecting flights — an escort between gates so your parent isn’t navigating an unfamiliar airport alone under time pressure.

“They arranged wheelchair assistance for my father flying alone to Delhi, and checked in with us the whole way.” — a client whose father flew unaccompanied last year

What we’d actually recommend arranging

Direct versus connecting — does it matter more here?

Yes, more than it would for a younger, more mobile traveller. A direct flight removes the connection risk entirely, and it’s often worth paying a bit more for if it’s available on your dates. Where a direct flight isn’t realistic, we’ll look specifically at which connecting airports have a good reputation for assistance — some are noticeably better set up for this than others.

What we do differently on these bookings

Beyond just ticking the assistance box, we treat these as a different kind of booking. We call the airline directly to confirm the request has actually been applied (not just submitted), we build in the longer connection by default rather than the cheapest one, and we stay reachable on the day of travel — not just up to the point of booking — in case anything needs adjusting.

If you’re weighing this up for a parent or older family member, it’s worth a phone call rather than trying to piece it together across an airline website. We do this often enough to know where it tends to go wrong, and how to avoid it.
